Free 11+ creative writing word bank: describing snow and ice (PDF)

Words and phrases for snow and ice: falling snow, frost, icicles and frozen ponds, and a story about a sledge that ends up on the ice. For Years 4 to 6, writing stories and descriptions for the 11+.

A4 PDF, 3 pages, 674 KB.

The first page of the Describing snow and ice.

What’s in it

The first page has the words for falling snow, frost, ice and playing out, grouped by what they do: things to see, what they’re like, and the verbs that do the work, each with an example sentence. A labelled picture names the main parts, and phrases for sound, smell and touch go beyond sight. The second page puts the words to work: the same place in two moods, a sentence built up step by step, sentence openers, comparisons of your own, opening lines, a model paragraph, feelings shown not told, and what to leave out.

The third page is a whole story, “First Down the Hill”, written from a five-minute plan, with numbered notes on what each part does. Every word, phrase and story on the sheet is written for Rush, and its methods match our creative writing guide: a five-minute plan, starting where the problem starts, and showing instead of telling. Each group of words is named as well as coloured, so it prints clearly in black and white.
