Free figurative language cheat sheet: simile to pathetic fallacy (PDF)

Twelve devices from simile to pathetic fallacy: what each one is, how to spot it, and how to explain its effect in an answer. For Years 3 to 6, for comprehension and creative writing.

A4 PDF, 2 pages, 474 KB.

The first page of the Figurative language.

What’s in it

The first page has twelve devices: simile, metaphor, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, repetition, rhetorical questions, the rule of three, imagery and the senses, emotive language and pathetic fallacy. Each has a plain definition, an example, how to spot it and a model answer that explains its effect.

The second page shows how to explain an effect in three steps, a weak and a strong answer side by side, a short passage with its devices labelled, the pairs that are easy to mix up (alliteration is about sounds, not letters), how to use each device in your own writing, and what to avoid.
