Free prefixes, suffixes and homophones cheat sheet (PDF)
Every Year 3 to 6 prefix and suffix with its rule, the doubling rules, and all the homophones from the curriculum, each in a sentence. For Years 3 to 6, and for the spelling in 11+ English.
What’s in it
The first page has the prefixes from the national curriculum with their meanings (including when in- becomes il-, im- or ir-), and the suffixes for Years 3 and 4 and Years 5 and 6 with the rule for adding each one, such as -ous, -tion, -sion, -cian, -able, -ible, -ant, -ent, -cious and -tial.
The second page has the spelling rules for adding endings: doubling the last letter, the -fer rule, dropping the e and changing y to i. Then every homophone and near-homophone from the curriculum’s Year 3 to 4 and Year 5 to 6 lists, each with a sentence that uses both words correctly. Every rule comes from English Appendix 1 of the national curriculum.
