How schools teach written methods: free cheat sheet (PDF)

Column addition and subtraction, short and long multiplication, the bus stop and long division, set out the way schools teach them. For parents and children in Years 3 to 6.

A4 PDF, 2 pages, 469 KB.

The first page of the How schools teach written maths.

What’s in it

The first page says when children meet each method, from the national curriculum, then works through column addition and column subtraction with two- and four-digit examples: where the carried digits go, how exchanging works (what you may know as borrowing), lining up from the right, and estimating and checking.

The second page does the same for short multiplication, long multiplication, short division (the bus stop) and long division, each with numbered steps, the most common mistake and how to check the answer. Every layout follows the government’s own examples in Appendix 1 of the maths curriculum, and every number in every example is worked out by code and checked, so nothing is mistyped.
